Christ 0 Review (2006)

by John Ritondo aka Jalapenopope (1340mag.com / Bad Attitude Heavy Metal Internet Radio)

Vengeance is eternal. The theme of The Count of Monte Cristo. A literary work that has been celebrated, discussed and recently modernized by Progressive metal legends, Vanden Plas.

Christ 0 uses melodic, orchestral changes to present symbolism and even challenging concepts such as schizophrena. The package is wrapped neatly in what this group has carefully created to be their sound. A recognizable sound that on tracks such as Fireroses Dance will give way to heavy rhythmn through the use of a chorus, keyboards and proves to the listener that with Vanden Plas metal doesn't have to be accomplished soley through guitar.

The arrangement of the songs is always forefront with this group utilizing slow difficult changes and emphasizing lyrics, the song is never to be sacrificed to the instruments. The concept of the album is never ignored which may hurt mass appeal a tad but makes metal magical.

This album is a treat for Vanden Plas fans and leads one to agree that this group and cinema will collide soon. The question is what about the non-progressive fan. The heavy guitar in Somewhere alone in the Dark and the disturbing lyrics that accompany it, make me believe that massive appeal from all metal fans is possible, but still not earned in every track. It is my only criticism of an album you will want to share with others.
